A Word for Seasons of Sifting
“Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” — Luke 22:31–32
Something that’s not clear in the English is clear in the Greek: the first “you” is plural. Satan hadn’t only asked (could also be translated demanded) to sift Simon as wheat; Satan had asked to sift all of the disciples.
But the second “you”? That’s singular. Jesus prayed for Simon specifically, that his faith wouldn’t fail during the test.
Why only pray for Simon?
Because often, if the leader falls, the rest fall away too.
Similarly, if the leader is restored, the others’ faith is strengthened.
If you feel like you’re being sifted right now…this test might not only be about you. In fact, it may not be about you at all. It may be about the many others—present and future disciples—who Satan anticipates will fall away if you fall.
The good news? Hebrews 7:25 teaches that Jesus “lives to intercede” for Abba’s sons and daughters. And if the “prayer of a righteous man accomplishes much” (James 5:16), how much more does the intercession of the Source of that righteousness?
Therefore, it’s no surprise that Jesus says, “when you have turned back,” not “if you turn back.” He had no doubt that, though Simon might stumble, his faith ultimately wouldn’t fail. And after his stumble, Simon Peter did turn back and strengthen the brothers. He was the first leader of the church, gathering them and waiting for the Holy Spirit to come. And when the Holy Spirit came, he was the one right there explaining to everyone else what was going on and inviting them to be a part of it.
If you feel like you’re experiencing sifting right now, take heart that 1.) Jesus is interceding for you individually, and His prayers do not fail, and 2.) you are being tested because of the powerful impact God is preparing you for—for others who will walk the narrow path right behind you.
